Below is a list of the most common hair loss and hair transplant FAQs. If you have any other questions don’t hesitate to contact us.

What causes hair loss?

Multiple factors cause people to lose their hair. The most common reason amongst men and women is androgenetic alopecia (AA), which is inherited from either the father or mother. This causes the testosterone hormone DHT to attack the hair follicles until miniaturisation and alopecia lead to baldness.

Will I need further procedures?

The hair loss process does not stop, and hairs will continuously become miniaturised. The transplanted hairs from the permanent zone are resistant to the hormone DHT, and so do not thin. Further transplants may be required if the hair loss process continues to affect other areas.

How long will it take for my hair to grow back?

Following the hair transplant, the hairs will grow over a period of 3 to 12 months. Initially, hairs may fall out but will regrow – and it is important to remember this is normal.

Do I need to take extra care after the procedure?

With ARTAS FUE (folicular unit extraction), the post-op care is not as extensive as FUT (follicular unit transplantation). Follicular unit transplantation entails some important post-op care, which you will be required to carry out. The doctors at JUVIDA Clinics will give you instructions on this; our primary aim is to provide optimal patient care.

How long will my hair transplant take?

This will depend on the type of treatment you undergo and the number of hairs to be transplanted. Treatment lasts between 4 to 8 hours, and during the procedure you will be sitting in a comfortable chair with regular breaks. At JUVIDA Clinics, we have the facilities to ensure your treatment and patient journey is incredibly relaxed.

Will I be able to achieve a full head of hair?

The aim of hair treatment is to restore hair to areas of baldness. A full head of hair contains around 40 – 60,000 hairs, and so it is not possible to get this level of hair again. However, transplants provide fantastic results and our doctors ensure your hair is restored to give the appearance of a full head of hair.

Should I cut my hair before the procedure?

No – we will do that for you on the day of your treatment. How short you need to keep your hair will depend on the type of treatment you undergo.

Is a transplant a cure to prevent future hair loss?

A hair transplant does not stop more hairs from falling out – we are able to provide you with advice and appropriate adjunctive therapy to slow the hair loss process down. During your consultation, we will give you relevant advice and treatment options, creating the best solution for you.

What type of haircut will I be able to have?

During your consultation, our doctors will discuss the hairstyle you want to keep. This helps the doctor to utilise their artistic skill and ensure your hair has the maximum density for the style you want. This does not mean you have to keep the one hairstyle, as our hair transplants accommodate any style, long or short.

Is FUE permanent?

The hairs are taken from the donor area (known as the permanent zone), which experiences thinning later in the patient’s life. This transplanted hair functions in the same way as it did in the donor area. The hair will last usually into old age, when the donor area starts to thin; at this point, more hair can be transplanted from a different part of the donor area.

Who can have FUE?

Most people can have FUE, but a full assessment/consultation is advised with a hair transplant surgeons to establish if you are a suitable candidate.

Do hair transplants hurt?

Our team perform FUE hair transplants under local anesthetic to ensure the focus sites are desensitised. The local injections will cause very slight discomfort. During the transplant itself, you have access to entertainment, and our team will make sure you feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible.

A patient may feel discomfort in the days following the treatment. To control this, our team provides medication.

Will FUE leave scars?

FUE is designed to avoid the presence of a linear scar, instead creating miniscule marks (which appear no bigger than dots). Once these heal, you may be able to have a shaved head without worrying about your scars being noticed (however, this is not a guarantee).

Do patients have to wear bandages after FUE?

No as a rule, but with open holes on the back of the scalp, we may apply a temporary dressing to handle any risks of bleeding (usually very mild).

Will FUE leave me unable to work?

For most jobs, work patterns need not be affected. However, those with physical jobs will need to avoid exerting themselves for at least seven days (which also means exercise for leisure should be avoided).

As the FUE procedure usually leaves a full or partial patch of shaved hair on the scalp, patients may feel uncomfortable returning to work. Patients can wear a hat straight after the treatment, which is highly recommended for those with bald scalps in sunny weather.

Are hair transplants safe?

Although all surgical procedures involve a degree of risk, under the care of a trained and skilled physician FUE is considered a safe procedure.

What is the ARTAS treatment?

This treatment uses digital imaging to harvest the healthiest grafts, for the most effective hair transplant. As with FUE, the surgical removal of tissue is totally unnecessary, causing no linear scars (which are a concern for many patients). This leads to faster recovery times and less impact on daily life and responsibilities.

Are hair transplants noticeable?

As the hair grows at a gradual pace, other people are unlikely to notice the change.
