Follicular Unit Extraction, known more commonly as FUE, is one of the two modern hair transplant techniques (FUT being the second). FUE is a minimally invasive hair restoration technique that requires skill and precision to achieve the optimal result.
How It Works
Your surgeon will begin the process by shaving off the hair on the back of your head or where your hair grows thickest. Then, using a specialised extraction instrument less than 1mm in diameter, the surgeon will begin to extract groups of 1- 4 hair follicles. These follicles are then transferred to the recipient area of the scalp and implanted using a powerful stereo microscope. Finally, the surgical site will be covered with either bandages or gauze.
Is FUE Right For Me?
It can be hard to determine whether FUE is the correct procedure for you. One of the key components needed for FUE is healthy hair growth at the back and sides of the head, in order to serve as a donor area for follicles to be harvested from. Other factors, such as hair colour, texture and waviness/curliness may also affect the cosmetic result.

Does FUE Hurt?
As FUE is a minimally invasive procedure that takes place under a local anaesthetic, pain is minimal with many patients claiming to feel no pain at all during the procedure. Please be aware, however, that you will be conscious for the entire duration.
Recovery
FUE may take several hours to complete, dependent on the amount of work needed by the surgeon. Not to worry, however, as you will go home on the day of the surgery.
You will likely feel pain at the transplant site as well as where the hair was taken so as to manage the pain, your surgeon may prescribe pain medications, antibiotics or anti-inflammatories.
It is advised that you wash your hair a few days after the surgery and should use only mild shampoos in the first few weeks. Similarly, you should not brush or comb down on the site for the first 3 weeks nor should you wear any hats or pullover jackets/shirts.
Should everything recover as planned, you may return to work after the first 3 days and exercise after about a week.
How Much Does FUE Cost?
There is not a set price for FUE as the procedure can vary based on a number of factors. You should be advised however that FUE can be quite expensive, depending on how extensive the work is.
